The two products
Smart film is a self-adhesive PDLC laminate applied to the interior face of existing glass, like any other window film, plus a low-voltage electrical connection.
Smart glass is a glazing unit manufactured with the PDLC layer laminated between glass plies at the factory. It arrives as a finished panel and is glazed into the opening like ordinary glass.
Cost comparison
- Smart film retrofit: roughly $50-100 per square foot installed, plus electrical work and controls
- Laminated smart glass: roughly $500-1,500 per square foot delivered and installed, depending on size, edge work and glazing complexity
- Add for both: transformer/driver hardware, licensed electrician, switch or automation integration

Performance comparison
Optically the two are close in the clear state, though laminated glass usually has a slight edge in clarity and haze because the film is encapsulated in a controlled factory environment with no field handling.
Durability favours smart glass decisively. Sealed between glass plies, the PDLC layer is protected from moisture, cleaning chemicals and physical contact — the three things that end the life of a retrofit film. Expect a longer usable life from laminated units.
Edge appearance also favours glass. A retrofit film has a visible perimeter edge and a bus bar exit that has to be concealed; laminated units hide both inside the glazing pocket.
Installation complexity
- Smart film: one to two days for a typical partition set, no glass removal, building stays occupied, but requires a concealed wiring route to each pane
- Smart glass: weeks of lead time, glazing crew and possibly lift equipment, temporary boarding of openings, and coordination with the electrical rough-in
- Both require the electrical design to be settled before install — this is the most common source of schedule slip in either approach
Choose smart film when
- The building is existing and occupied
- The budget cannot absorb glazing replacement
- The project is a tenant improvement with a lease-term horizon
- Multiple locations need the same upgrade at rollout scale
- The glass is fine and only privacy behaviour needs to change
Choose smart glass when
- The project is new construction or a full facade or partition replacement
- Appearance is scrutinized — executive suites, flagship retail, showpiece architecture
- The glazing must also deliver acoustic or structural performance
- Long service life and minimum maintenance outweigh first cost
- The panel will be in a wet or high-touch environment, such as a shower enclosure
