What 3M Thinsulate Is
3M Thinsulate Climate Control film is a Low-E (low-emissivity) insulating film. Unlike standard solar film that only addresses summer heat, Thinsulate improves the insulating performance of your glass in both directions — keeping heat out in summer and keeping warmth in during winter.
How It Works
Thinsulate adds a Low-E coating to your existing glass, reflecting heat in summer and retaining interior heat in winter — the same insulating principle as 3M Thinsulate insulation used in jackets. It effectively turns single-pane glass closer to dual-pane performance.
Why It Makes Sense in LA
In Los Angeles, Thinsulate is primarily chosen for heat rejection, but it also reduces drafts and temperature swings in older buildings with single-pane glass — improving comfort and reducing HVAC load year-round.
Best Applications
Thinsulate is ideal where energy efficiency and comfort matter:
- Older commercial buildings with single-pane glass
- Residential homes with original windows
- Buildings in areas with both hot summers and cooler winters
Optically Clear
3M Thinsulate is optically clear, so it won't change the appearance of your windows — you get energy performance without a visible tint. Compared to full Low-E glass replacement, it delivers much of the benefit at a fraction of the cost and disruption.
Pricing
Thinsulate sits mid-range within $10–$18 per square foot. Call (323) 466-0608 for a free estimate.
