3M Safety Film Overview
3M Safety and Security film is a thick, tear-resistant film that bonds to glass and holds it together on impact. Instead of shattering into dangerous shards, treated glass stays in place — slowing intruders, containing fragments during earthquakes, and protecting people from flying glass.
3M Safety Series Variants
The Ultra Safety Series uses a patented multi-layer tear-resistant construction:
- Ultra S400 / Ultra 400 — strong everyday safety and security
- Ultra S600 / Ultra 600 — higher impact and forced-entry resistance
- Ultra S800 / Ultra 800 — maximum thickness and protection
Safety Series vs Ultra Series: Two Different Jobs
The 3M Safety Series — commonly seen as clear S40, S70, and S140 grades — is built primarily for glass retention and human-impact safety: containing fragments during an earthquake, protecting people from accidental impact with a large pane, and meeting glazing safety expectations on doors and sidelights.
The Ultra Series is the tear-resistant construction built for deliberate attack. It is the one specified where someone will be swinging a tool at the glass, and where the goal is measured in seconds of delay rather than fragment containment.
Thickness alone does not make glass secure. On a genuine forced-entry application, an attachment system that bonds the filmed glass to the frame matters as much as the film grade, because unattached glass can be pushed out of the opening in one piece.

Clear or Tinted
3M safety film is available clear for maximum visibility or in tinted versions that add solar control alongside protection. Both options are installed at the upper end of $10–$18 per square foot for security-grade film.
3M Safety Film vs LLumar Safety Film
Both 3M and LLumar make excellent safety film. As a dealer of both, we recommend 3M for clients who specify 3M by name and LLumar where it fits the project best — the protection levels are comparable.
